Summary
Stećak
is defined as a monolithic, horizontal or vertical grave or tombstone. The name itself says that this montments are „standing“.
According to our tipology we have four the most common types of stećaks: sljemenjak, box, board and crux. Sljemenjak
is grave monument of prismatic shape, with a flat or saddle-roofed upper surface
with or without base. They are very decorated especially sljemenjak. Decorations
are done by simbols, figurative compositions and dekorative ornaments. There are some specifics especially from this area
such as the traditional fleur-de- lys in Imotski type „A“ and „B“. Symbol „B“is shown
to have been connected both with the tree of life and the Passion of Christ. Those tombstones are decorated almost everywhere
but we can follow those workshops and workcraftsmen from area and area, and we can differ each area by its work, their radius
was about fifty kilometars. Sometimes it seams to me either that they work very well or that they use something to help them
to copy and to do ingravings. Fleur-de-lys is very romantic symbol that expresses
sadness. The same is with the image of a woman holding a horse without horseman,
images of abandoned horse are also common in this area and it is used for the same purpose.

They are cultural features of late medieval heritage of the western part
of the Balkan penisula. The majority of monuments
belong to 14th and 15th century. The majority of authors now believe that they belong to Vlasi. But earlier there were lots
of different theories of etnic heritage and belongings of them. This monuments are covered with layers and should be cleaned
and preserved. Luckilly for them there are legends that say that whoever touches
them will suffer an accident or any kind of missfortune. This legend keeps them safe to a certain point but still lots of
them vanish every day due to construction of roads, or just to be built in certain buildings. There are some new authors,
who tell us how to stand and how to look at stećaks. They think that symbols on them are connected with astronomy, and
that positions of stars or moon can represent certain constelation, which can set the time of death more precise. Motives
on stećaks resemble a lot to prehistoric and medieval motivs and that could tell us a lot about Vlasi, who were connected
with nature as ancient people use to be.
